Spirit Box uses mathematically-structured procedural animation techniques combined with Victorian-era optical effects to comment on the scientific passion for collecting and observing.
Both the luminous moth and its motion are entirely derived from simple mathematical instructions, but it is not difficult to ascribe purpose - even life, perhaps - to this tiny sliver of soul in a jar. There is a profound mystery here. If simple mathematical descriptions can evoke the appearance of 'intention' so easily, how can we determine what is at work in real biological systems?
The Spirit Box can really only properly be appreciated in a real-life setting, but here is a clip demonstrating it in motion (it has no sound).
